Once Upon a Time Away: Woodlands, Waterfalls, and Wedded bliss!

Have you ever stumbled upon a place so stunning that you’re convinced it was conjured up by some benevolent wizard?

I’m pretty sure these places were! However, my adventures have taken a bit of a detour. Our beloved camper van is currently serving as, well, a Ford Transit work van, which means we haven't been able to take it out for those dreamy getaways. So, until we can snag a new camper van and hit the open road again, I find myself reminiscing about my favorite places we’ve explored. There's no way I could rank these spots in order of beauty because they all hold a special place in my heart, each one sitting at No. 1 in its own right. So, in no particular order, sit back, get comfy, and let me take you on a whirlwind tour of some of these magical spots that feel like they've jumped straight out of a storybook! (I really need to take better pictures, as these do not do any justice 😂)

1. Lydford Gorge: Devon’s Enchanted Forest

If you’re into dramatic landscapes that make you feel like you’ve wandered into the set of a fantasy movie, then Lydford Gorge in Devon is your spot. Picture this: a deep ravine draped in lush greenery, with the sound of the River Lyd rushing through it, like nature’s own white noise machine. The gorge is home to the infamous Devil’s Cauldron, a whirlpool that swirls with an almost hypnotic energy. Just don’t go trying to make a deal there; it’s not that kind of cauldron.

I had no idea what we were about to witness when we stumbled upon it. I wanted to go and see a waterfall, then we followed the trail around. We heard this almighty noise and then we saw it. The gushing force of the Devils Cauldron. We were literally speechless at the beauty that was in front of us. The sheer power of mother nature had carved out this picturesque pothole.

If you are looking for a hike that’ll challenge your calves and reward you with jaw-dropping waterfalls? then Lydford Gorge, is it. It’s one of those places that feels alive, buzzing with the kind of energy that makes you believe in fairies (or at least the odd friendly squirrel).

2. Ullapool: Where the Highlands Hug You

Let’s head north to Scotland, where Ullapool sits nestled between mountains that look like they were hand-sculpted by a particularly artistic giant. This charming little fishing village is the gateway to some of the most breathtaking scenery in the Highlands, boasting a vibe that’s equal parts laid-back and utterly awe-inspiring.

Ullapool is the perfect blend of rugged and cozy. We fell head over heels for this quaint fishing haven—so much so that we started daydreaming about relocating! Seriously, we were even browsing local estate agents like, “Hmm, how can we make this our new home?” I can’t quite put my finger on what captured our hearts, but one thing’s for sure: we definitely wanted to stay longer—like, a lot longer!

Our day kicked off with a whale-watching adventure, but we had to turn back as the weather decided to play hard to get. However, we were treated to a few playful common dolphins and a cheeky seagull that hopped aboard for a joyride. Who knew our ocean outing would come with unexpected entertainment?

After our aquatic escapades, we popped into a local pub to warm up by the fireplace and snag some travel tips from the locals and fellow wanderers. It truly felt like a home away from home. We camped out in our van by the waterfront, feasting on freshly caught seafood from the local fishmongers. If you’re fortunate enough to catch a sunset over Loch Broom, you’ll see why people fall head over heels for this place. It’s the kind of sunset that inspires poetry—or at least demands an Instagram story filled with heart emojis.

3. Blue Lagoon, Wales: Mermaid (or Merman) Approved

Next, we’re diving into the Blue Lagoon in Wales. Now, I don’t want to start any rumors, but I’m pretty sure this is where mermaids go on their day off. This stunning, turquoise lagoon is tucked away in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, and it’s an absolute gem.

What was once a slate quarry has been transformed into a surreal swimming spot that’s as popular with adventure junkies as it is with anyone who just wants to float around and feel like they’re in a fairytale. The cliffs surrounding the lagoon are perfect for cliff diving if you’re feeling brave (or have a deep-seated need to impress someone). But if you’re more about the “relax and enjoy the view” life, it’s equally rewarding to just sit on the edge, dangle your feet in the water, and soak up the magic of the place.

We took to the water on our SUP and found a small cave that you could swim into. The water was calm as you were in a cove so it was perfect for beginners (like us) to learn to stand on the board. There were also people in the ex-quarry jumping off the top into the clear waters below, but we were definalty not brave enough to try that, but it looked fun (for them!).

This was just one highlight of our tour of Wales, and let me tell you, there are still so many breathtaking places on my list to explore! The Seven Sisters Waterfalls are at the very top. If they’re anything like this adventure, I can’t wait to see what magic awaits!

4. Dalyan, Turkey: Ancient Ruins and Turtle Power

Let’s swap the chilly waters of Wales for the warm, sun-kissed coast of Turkey. Dalyan is the kind of place that makes you wonder why you don’t just pack up and move to a Mediterranean village (and yes! We checked out the local estate agents here too! 😂). It’s got everything: ancient ruins, stunning beaches, and local food that makes you seriously consider asking for recipes (even though you know you’ll never make it as good as they do).

We married during Covid, which meant that most of our wedding plans were cancelled or extremely stripped back to 12 people, which was heartbreaking, but on the plus side, (every silver lining and all that!) the money we saved on the ceremony we were able to spend on a honeymoon. We Literally booked it the day before our wedding and flew out the day after!!

We booked an excursion with Turkey’s very own Indiana Jones, Altay, and zoomed around the mountains in his open-top jeep. Our first stop was Iztuzu Beach, a nesting site for loggerhead turtles. If you’re lucky, you might spot one of these majestic creatures waddling their way across the sand. Unfortunately, we visited out of season and didn’t get to see any, but the beach was still breathtaking nonetheless. Next on our adventure were the iconic Lycian Rock Tombs. Carved into the sides of hilltops and mountains, these ancient structures served as resting places for prominent members of society, buried with their most treasured possessions to accompany them into the afterlife. Altay found one that we could hike right up to—an eerie yet outstanding experience! The following day, we took a boat trip down the river, cruising past the tombs and stopping at a picturesque spot where we dove into the clear waters below. We even did a bit of crabbing! I wasn’t too sure about it at first, but once the BBQ was lit, I found that the crabs weren’t such a bad idea after all. With delicious salad and Turkish wine to accompany the meal, it was the perfect end to a perfect getaway!

5. Kingley Vale, Chichester: Walk Amongst the Ancients

Last but not least, let’s talk about Kingley Vale, nestled near Chichester in West Sussex, not too far from where I live. This ancient yew forest is the stuff legends are made of. Seriously, some of the yew trees here are over 2,000 years old. Walking through Kingley Vale feels like stepping back in time, or maybe stepping into another world entirely. It’s a place where history hangs in the air, mingling with the earthy scent of ancient wood and moss.

The trail takes you through a landscape that’s equal parts eerie and beautiful. The gnarled yews twist and turn in ways that seem almost human, like they’re frozen mid-dance. You can almost hear their whisper, guiding you with their knowledge, like an old grandfather tree. There’s something humbling about being in the presence of trees that have stood here since before the Romans. Plus, the view from the top of the hill is worth the climb—a panoramic sweep of the South Downs that’ll make you feel on top of the world (literally).
